2010 Marilyn Prince Award Application Invitation

Sent 4/16/10

Dear First Year Teacher,

I’m writing to invite you to apply for the 2009-2010 Marilyn Prince Award, which has a $500 prize.

My mother, Marilyn Prince, taught in Placer County for over 20 years, mostly in the primary grades at the Colfax Elementary School. She loved children and she loved teaching. She died last year at 81 after a full and rewarding life.

Last year, our extended family, including my brothers, and many cousins, established an annual award in her name for a first-year teacher in Placer County. The award is $500.00.

We invite you to send a brief application, no more than two pages, as an attached Word or PDF document, or no more than 600 words in an email. Please answer the three questions below. My niece, Emily Prince, and I will read the letters and choose the winner.

  1. What was the most memorable classroom moment in your first year of teaching?
  2. What's a specific example of how you believe your teaching helped a student, or students?
  3. What are you most looking forward to in your second year of teaching?
Please send your reply by email to me – sdprince@stanfordalumni.org - no later than midnight on Friday, May 21, 2010. We will choose the winner and notify applicants by June 1, 2010.

As background, last year we received 11 applications from 91 candidates. The winner was Katelin Oliver, who taught 7th and 8th grades at the Alta-Dutch Flat elementary school. We hope more first-year teachers will apply this year. More information is here - http://www.prince-ricker.net/marilyn-prince-award.htm .

Regardless of whether or not you apply for the award, my family offers its thanks for your decision to teach, and for your efforts during your first year. It’s a vital profession; the future rests in your hands.

Sincerely,

Susan Prince
